PEFO community library
The PEFO community libraries are information centers aimed at promoting reading culture and Reading for fun. PEFO operates two community libraries both located in Eastern Uganda, Jinja and Busia. The Library Facilities were constructed with support from the BLUE-LUPIN foundation and The Stephen Lewis Foundation Canada. The libraries offer a wide range of programmes to the community including reading sessions, indoor and outdoor games, community outreach services, Art and recreation, storytelling sessions, learning circles, Tv/Documentaries, Periodicals. It also provides access to interesting story books/readers, reference information, Research, school text-books, teaching guides, learning material for higher institutions.Community Read at Home
The Read-at-Home Literacy Program, initiated by PEFO through the Community Library, promotes recreational reading in remote areas where children struggle to access physical libraries. Launched during the COVID-19 pandemic to support continuous learning during school closures, the program has been so successful that it continues to serve communities far from library facilities. Book banks have been set up and distributed to reading centers in homes led by elders and public spots frequented by children. Parents can borrow books for their children to read at home, with weekly returns, and book banks rotate between centers every two weeks to ensure variety. A Granny Education Committee, with volunteer grannies and library staff, oversees the program, which runs continuously during school terms and holidays. Nursery and early primary students are targeted during school days, while older children join during holidays and weekends. Sessions include games, storytelling, riddles, read-aloud, and spelling exercises. Community-level reading competitions are held periodically, rewarding outstanding achievers to inspire others.
Menstrual Hygiene and Reusable Sanitary Pads
PEFO promotes menstrual hygiene through trainings of youths and the community in making re-usable pads, and engagement of youths in basic sexual and reproductive health talks. This aims at keeping girls at school and reducing on teenage pregnancies and early marriages.
